Bears pick up another Florida split

NAPLES, FLA.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (2-2) earned another split on the second day of its Florida trip. The Bears defeated Rockford University (2-4) 4-3 before falling to RIT (5-1) 5-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (ROCKFORD)
  • The Regents opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second. They got their first on an error and their second with an RBI single from right fielder Tomi Hill.
  • The Bears took the lead with a three-run bottom of the third. Freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) knocked in senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) with an infield single. Freshman first baseman Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette) followed with a single up the middle to plate St. Clair. Sophomore designated player Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) completed the rally with a single to right to score Cronin.
  • Freshman second baseman Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2.
  • Rockford got to within one, scoring its third run on an error. However, Bears junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) induced a fly ball with the tying run at third for the final out.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (ROCKFORD)
  • Birmingham (2-0) threw another gem, allowing three unearned runs on eight hits, while striking out three. She's lowered her earned-run-average to 1.24.
  • Kendall Knoll (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, and striking out four in four innings. Claire Shanahan threw the last two scoreless innings for Rockford.
  • Kuttruff and St. Clair were each 2-for-3 with a run scored. Cronin was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Rosick was 1-for-4 with a run.
  • Regents shortstop Mia Cosentino was 2-for-3 and Hill was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • The win ends a four-game skid against Rockford. The Bears are now 3-4 in the all-time series.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (RIT)
  • The Bears jumped out in front in the top of the first as Rosick scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to right field off the bat of second baseman Sabrina Hotra.
  • Birmingham gave Potsdam its lead back in the top of the fourth with a single up the middle to score Cronin.
  • RIT answered with four unanswered runs. The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a ground out. They scored three times in the sixth on a Hotra double, a single from right fielder Carlianna Ewing and a passed ball.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBER (RIT)
  • Horne (0-2) allowed five runs, four earned, on 11 hits and two walks while striking out two.
  • Jessica Majot (1-0) went the distance for RIT, allowing two runs on five hits and five walks. She struck out six.
  • Rosick was 2-for-4 with a run. Cronin was 1-for-2 with a run. Horne was 1-for-3 and Birmingham was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
  • The contest was the Bears' first ever meeting with the Tigers.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
After an off day tomorrow, the Bears face Bethany College at 11 a.m. and Brooklyn College at 1 p.m. on Thursday in Naples.
