Bears ground Hawks, Thompson sets wins record

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-0) defeated Hartwick College (0-5) 12-8 on Saturday afternoon in the snow. Senior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made nine saves to earn his 19th career victory, breaking the previous mark of 18 held by Bears Hall of Famer and fellow All-American Ryan Hanretty '05.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hawks senior captain Liam McManus (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) opened the scoring at 12:28 of the first quarter. Bears senior attackman Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) gave Potsdam the lead with back-to-back goals. Senior captain Jakob Lynch (Alexanderia Bay, N.Y/Alexandria) assisted on both markers, the second coming while a man-up. Junior midfielder Spencer Hogaboom (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) got Hartwick even with a goal with just eight seconds remaining in the first.
  • Senior attackman Rowisonkies Barnes (Akwesasne, N.Y./The Hill Academy) netted a man-up goal 51 seconds into the second quarter with another helper from Kozloski.
  • After Hawks senior captain Colin August (Garrison, N.Y./James I. O'Neill) tied the game, the Bears answered with an 8-0 run extending well into the third quarter to take an 11-3 lead. Kozloski had two goals and two assists during the stretch and sophomore attackman Braydon Goddard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) added a goal and an assist.
  • Harwick closed the contest on a 5-1 burst, including two more goals from August, but couldn't make up any more ground.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot the Hawks 55-32 and went 2-for-5 in man-up situations, while Hartwick was 0-for-2.
  • Kozloski finished with a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists. He also had three ground balls.
  • Goddard had two goals and one assist and Lynch registered a goal and two assists. Barnes scored two goals.
  • Senior defender Alex Farben-Griggs (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) and freshman defender Damyn LeClair (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) continued to dismantle their opposition. Farben-Griggs recorded seven caused turnovers and six ground balls and LeClair had four caused turnovers, four ground balls and an assist.
  • Senior captain Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) dominated the faceoff circle again, winning 18 of his 23 attempts and collecting 15 ground balls.
  • Hawks freshman goalie AJ Saragossi (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) made 14 saves and August contributed three goals.
