POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (5-0) overwhelmed SUNY Poly (3-3) 19-6 on Senior Day. The Bears are 5-0 for the second time in program history and the first since 2001.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Potsdam set the tone with two goals in the game's first 41 seconds and they led 6-2 after one quarter. Senior attackman Rowisonkies Barnes (Akwesasne, N.Y./The Hill Academy) and junior captain Morgan Fox (Clayton, N.Y./Thousand Islands) each had two goals and sophomore attackman Braydon Goddard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had two assists. Senior captain Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) opened the scoring 12 seconds in and senior attackman Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) had the other goal.
- Another 6-2 quarter on goals from six different Bears gave them a 12-4 lead at the half. Fox scored again. Sophomore midfielder Grant Dicob (Watertown, N.Y./Carthage) netted his first career goal. Senior defender Alex Farben-Griggs (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains), sophomore midfielder Preston Daniels (Peru, N.Y./Peru), junior midfielder Andrew Gubbins (South Pomfret, Vt./Woodstock Union) and freshman midfielder Ronin Oakes (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) also scored.
- Potsdam put the game away with a 5-1 third quarter and a 17-5 advantage after 45 minutes. Barnes had two more including an man-up marker. Kozloski and Oakes each scored again and Goddard added another man-up goal.
- Barnes and Goddard buried the last two of the contest in the fourth quarter for the 19-6 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Barnes led the charge with seven points on five goals and two assists.
- Goddard finished with a career-high six points on two goals and four assists to go with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
- Fox also registered a personal best five points on three goals and two assists.
- Kozloski added two goals and two assists along with four ground balls, while Daniels had a goal and two assists and Oakes scored twice.
- Freshman defender Damyn LeClair (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) was outstanding again with five caused turnovers, seven ground balls and an assist.
- Farben-Griggs totaled two caused turnovers, seven ground balls and a goal.
- Costello continued to dominate the faceoff circle, winning 19 of his 27 attempts and collecting 15 ground balls.
- Senior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) needed just five saves to earn the victory, extending his program record to 20.
- Freshman goalie Tim Brooder (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) closed out the contest with four saves in the last 13:24 for Potsdam.
- SUNY Poly freshman goalie Tyler Baisley (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) allowed 12 goals and made nine saves in the first half.
