ONEONTA, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta (4-5, 1-0 SUNYAC) edged the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (5-2, 0-1) 12-11 on Saturday in the teams' SUNYAC opener. Senior attackman
Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) led the Bears with a career-high seven points on three goals and four assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams stayed within two goals of each other for the entire contest.
- Thomas Hnis opened the scoring for the Red Dragons in the first quarter, but senior attackman Rowisonkies Barnes (Akwesasne, N.Y./The Hill Academy) tied the score with an assist from Braydon Goddard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs).
- Potsdam edged Oneonta 3-2 in the second quarter and led 4-3 at the break. Senior captain Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) made it 2-1 just 12 seconds into the quarter. After two more Hnis goals put the Red Dragons back up, Kozloski set up Barnes twice in 29 seconds to send the Bears into the half up one.
- Kozloski started the third quarter with a man-up goal on a feed from Barnes to make 5-3, but Oneonta answered with three straight. Hnis had two man-up goals in the stretch. Kozloski set up Barnes again at 7:27 and Goddard assisted on a goal from senior defender Alex Farben-Griggs (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) at 3:06 and it was 7-7 after 45 minutes.
- Oneonta had a 5-4 advantage in the fourth to pull out the 12-11 win. Goddard set up Kozloski at 12:06 for Potsdam's final lead. After three more Red Dragon goals, strikes from Kozloski and Barnes got Potsdam even at 9-9 and 10-10. Oneonta struck again at 2:50 and 1:51. Sophomore midfielder Preston Daniels (Peru, N.Y./Peru) got the Bears within 12-11 with 1:29 left, but they couldn't find the equalizer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Red Dragons outshot the Bears 48-44 and were 3-for-5 a man-up, while Potsdam was 1-for-3.
- Barnes finished with six points on five goals and an assist. Goddard had three assists.
- Costello was 15-for-24 with seven ground balls.
- Freshman defender Damyn LaClair (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) caused five turnovers and collected four ground balls.
- Senior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made 13 saves.
- Red Dragon goalie Mark Restivo stopped nine shots for the win.
- Hnis led Oneonta's offense with six goals.
