Red Dragons pull away from Bears in second half

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta (6-2, 3-0 SUNYAC) used a big second half to secure a 21-12 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Dragons broke a 3-3 tie with four straight goals to build a 7-3 advantage after one quarter. Sophomore attack Ava Murphy (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon), sophomore attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) and junior attack Abby Kraus (Buffalo, N.Y./Frontier) each scored for the Bears.
  • Potsdam used a 5-4 second quarter to close within 10-8 at the half. Murphy scored twice. Thompson scored her second and senior captains Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) and Auna Shadle (Massena, N.Y./Massena) also found the back of the net.
  • Oneonta scored the contest's only four goals of the third quarter and led 14-8 after 45 minutes.
  • The Red Dragons capped the win with a 7-4 fourth quarter. Thompson added man-up and man-down goals and MacWilliams and Shadle had the other two.

  • Oneonta outshot Potsdam 48-23.
  • Thompson finished with five points on four goals and an assist to go with three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover.
  • MacWilliams had two goals, two assists, three ground balls, and four draw controls.

  • Murphy scored three times and Kraus had a goal and four caused turnovers.
  • Senior goalie Olivia Minarich (Albany, N.Y./Albany) made a career-high 15 saves for the Bears.
  • Freshman midfielder Ava Fitzsimons (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) led Oneonta with seven goals, an assist, four ground balls and nine draw controls.
  • Senior midfielder Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) scored five goals for the Red Dragons.
  • Junior goalie Margot Haring (Doylesville, Pa./Ventral Bucks) earned the win with three saves in the first half. Freshman Ava Berkowitz (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) made five stops in the second half.
