POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (2-0) overpowered Alfred State (0-4) 20-3 on Wednesday evening. Senior captain
Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) won every one of his 26 faceoff attempts and collected 23 ground balls to break the program record. He also had a goal and an assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears scored three times in the first quarter, 10 in the second and seven in the third. They raced out to a 17-0 lead over the first 40:25.
- The Pioneers finally got on the board with 8:25 left in the third quarter and the final two goals of the contest.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Potsdam outshot Alfred State 60-17 and finished with a 65-25 advantage in ground balls.
- The Bears were 2-for-4 in extra-man opportunities and the Pioneers were 1-for-3.
- Senior attackman Rowisonkies Barnes (Akwesasne, N.Y./The Hill Academy) had a career day with 10 points on five goals and five assists.
- Sophomore attackman Braydon Goddard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) added five points on two goals and three assists. He also had three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
- Senior attackman Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) also had five points on four goals and an assist.
- Freshman midfielder Ronin Oakes (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) registered four points on two goals and two assists.
- Freshman defender Damyn LeClair (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) had another monster game with eight caused turnovers, 12 ground balls and an assist.
- Senior defender Alex Farben-Griggs (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) added three caused turnovers and six ground balls.
- Senior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made three saves and allowed a goal in the first 41:46 to earn his 17th career victory. Freshman Tim Brooder (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) made three saves and allowed two goals in the last 18:14 in his collegiate debut.
- Pioneers junior goalie Matthew Burris (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) made 22 saves in the contest.
- Costello now has 308 ground balls in his career.
