Bears pick up first sweep of Golden Knights

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-7) swept Clarkson University (2-13) for the first time in program history on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears took game one 11-3 and shut out the Golden Knights 9-0 in game two.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • The Bears scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) that scored senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls).
  • Potsdam broke the game open with eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the second. Junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski), Rosick, freshman second baseman Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and sophomore catcher Hannah Fagan (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) each had RBI singles and freshman designated player Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette) knocked in two. Sophomore first baseman Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
  • Clarkson got two back on homer from freshman first baseman Ryleigh Fontana (Victor, N.Y./Victor) in the top of the third and one more in the fourth with an RBI single from center fielder Emily Martin (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake).
  • St. Clair knocked in Rosick on a ground out and Horne walked it off with a single to bring in Kuttruff.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
  • Birmingham (4-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks to pick up the win.
  • Clarkson sophomore pitcher Amanda Corrice (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) (0-6) was roughed up for nine runs, only three earned, on nine hits in 1.2 innings. Sophomore Bella Hotchkiss (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) allowed two unearned runs on three hits in the last three innings.
  • Rosick was 4-for-4 with an RBI and four runs scored. Junior left fielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) 2-for-3 with two runs.
  • St. Clair, Horne and Cronin all had a hit and two RBI. Kuttruff finished 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Potsdam scored six times on seven hits in the bottom of the third. St. Clair and sophomore pinch hitter Mia Cooper (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) each had RBI singles and junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) hit a two-run homer.
  • The Bears capped the scoring with three more in the top of the fourth. Freshman pinch hitter Cassidy Richards (Jay, N.Y./AuSable Valley) singled to score Kuttruff and Cronin hit a two-run double to plate Wasserman and Richards.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Horne (2-3) scattered three hits and struck out one to earn her second career shut out.
  • Golden Knights freshman Avery McDonald (Chateauguay, N.Y./Chateaugay) (1-2) allowed six runs on 10 hits in three innings. Freshman Janzen Long (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) gave up three runs on three hits and two walks in one inning.
  • Cronin led the Bears, going 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI. St. Clair was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Wasserman was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
  • Birmingham was 1-for-2 with two RBI and Fagen went 2-for-3 with a run.
  • The Bears are 5-4 in their last nine meetings with Clarkson.

The Bears open up SUNYAC play against SUNY Cortland at home on Friday at 3 p.m.
