Bears split at Route 11 Rivals Canton

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-11, 2-4) split a doubleheader at SUNY Canton (2-12, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon. The Bears shut out the Roos 11-0 in game one, and Canton took game two 6-4. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
  • The Bears opened scoring with two runs in the top of the first. Senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) scored on a throwing error, and freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) came home on a wild pitch. 
  • Potsdam extended its lead to 7-0 at the top of the third. Rosick came in on another throwing error. Junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) hit her first home run of the season to left center to make it 4-0. St. Clair scored on a series of errors by the Roos. Junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) came home on a wild pitch, and sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) came in on an RBI double from freshman designated player Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette). 
  • Potsdam added three more runs in the fourth inning. St. Clair hit her third homer of the season, bringing in freshman pinch runner Courtney LaBaff (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa). Junior pinch runner Sara Richards (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman pitcher Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus). 
  • Rosick scored her third run of the game on an RBI double by Birmingham in the fifth, as the Bears completed the shutout, 11-0. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1) 
  • Birmingham (5-5) earned her first shutout of the season, allowing no runs on four hits and zero walks, striking out six. 
  • Canton pitcher Sydney Tanner (1-6) earned the loss, giving up five runs on four hits. Arianna Steele allowed six runs on six hits and two walks. 
  • Birmingham led Potsdam's offense, going 3-for-4 with the homer, three RBI, and a run scored. 
  • St. Clair was 2-for-4, recording a home run, two RBI, and three runs. 
  • Madelin Marquart was 2-for-3 for the Roos. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2) 
  • Potsdam scored the first run of game two in the top of the second as Horne came in on a throwing error. 
  • Canton tied the game as Marquart singled with the bases loaded, bringing Emily Hobart home. 
  • The Roos added two runs in the bottom of the third. Bridgette Fox scored on the throw. Ava Bouchey stole home to put Canton up 3-1. 
  • Kuttruff got one back for the Bears on an RBI groundout by Cronin in the top of the fifth. 
  • The Bears retook the lead with a two-run homer from Wasserman at the top of the sixth, bringing in Rosick. 
  • Canton closed out the game with three runs to end the sixth. Jordyn Tarbox scored on a passed ball. Bridgette Fox was hit by pitch, walking in run number five for the Roos, and Bouchey hit an RBI single to bring home Ace Rogers. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2) 
  • Kuttruff (1-2) picked up the loss, allowing three runs on zero hits and four walks, and striking out four batters in 2.2 innings. Horne allowed three runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings. Birmingham pitched 0.1 innings, allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts. 
  • Tanner (2-5) earned the win, allowing four runs on seven hits, with four strikeouts. 
  • Horne was 2-for-3 behind the plate, scoring one run. Kuttruff went 1-for-2 and scored one run. Wasserman was 1-for-3 with two RBI on her third home run of the season. 
  • Fox and Cassandra Forrest both led the Roos offense, going 2-for-3. 

WHAT'S NEXT 
The Bears travel to Oswego tomorrow afternoon for another doubleheader with games at 1 & 3 p.m.
