OSWEGO, N.Y.—Oswego State (12-0, 6-0 SUNYAC) swept a doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-13, 2-6) on Sunday afternoon. The Lakers took game one 9-3 and game two 6-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- The Lakers scored a run in each of the first two innings on a ground out and a double from second baseman Delaney Wiley.
- The Bears tied the game in the top of the third. Senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) singled home freshman first baseman Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette). Junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) also singled to score junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski).
- Oswego countered with two-run double from catcher Emma Budzinski to make it 4-2 in the bottom of the third.
- Sophomore designated player Mia Cooper (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) got the Bears within 4-3 in the top of the fourth with a triple to score Cronin.
- However, Potsdam wouldn't get any closer. The Lakers scored three in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the sixth to close out the 9-3 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
- Birmingham (5-9) allowed nine runs on 12 hits and six walks in six innings.
- Alyssa Budzinski (8-0) allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out seven to earn the win.
- Rosick was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Wasserman was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Cronin was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
- Right fielder Lilian Haggerty led the Lakers offensively, going 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Wiley finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Third baseman Gianna DeGonza was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Center fielder Kira Wright was 2-for-4 with a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- The Bears started quickly in game two, scoring twice in the top of the first. Sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) grounded out, bringing in Rosick and Birmingham.
- The Lakers answered with two runs in the bottom of the third and three in the bottom of the fourth to grab a 5-2 lead. Ryin Perico had a two-run single to bring in the first two runs. Right fielder Ava Margosian singled in the go ahead run. A Wright triple made it 4-2. Wiley singled to extend the lead to three.
- Wiley knocked in the Oswego's sixth run, the final run of the game, in the bottom of the sixth with another single.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
- Horne (4-9) allowed six runs on 11 hits and struck out three for the Bears.
- Chloe Cunningham (3-0) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out three to pick up the victory for the Lakers.
- Horne was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Birmingham went 1-for-3 with a run. Rosick and Cronin also had hits.
- Perico was 3-for-3 with two RBI for Oswego. Wright went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Wiley was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
