Red Dragons down Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta (10-20, 8-2 SUNYAC) swept a doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-15, 2-8) on Friday evening. The Red Dragons took game one 9-0 and game two 18-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
  • Oneonta scored twice in the top of the first on a double from junior first baseman Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) and a single from senior third baseman Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas).
  • The Red Dragons struck for five more runs on four hits in the top of the second. Freshman shortstop Ella Kean (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Cardello added RBI singles.
  • Oneonta closed the scoring with two more in the top of the fifth. Sophomore pinch hitter Emma Moore (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) added a final RBI single.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME ONE)
  • Bears sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (3-6) allowed nine runs, five earned, on nine hits.
  • Senior pitcher Anna Torgerson (Chester, N.J./Mendham) (6-7) earned the win on four shutout innings, scattering two hits and striking out four. Sophomore Tanner Smith (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) threw a scoreless fifth, allowing a hit and striking out one.
  • Junior designated player Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski), senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) and freshman first baseman Kaidence Kronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette) each had a hit for Potsdam.
  • Cardello led the way for Oneonta, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run.
  • Brown and sophomore center fielder Sophia Camacho (Newburgh, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) were each 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
  • The Red Dragons erupted for 13 runs on 12 hits in the top of the first. Cardello and Brown each had a two-run double during the inning.
  • Oneonta added a run in the third and two each in the fourth and fifth to finish the sweep.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME TWO)
  • Birmingham (5-7) allowed nine runs on eight hits in the top of the first. Horne allowed five runs on nine hits in the first three innings. Freshman Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) allowed four runs on six hits in the final two innings.
  • Freshman Caitlin McTiernan (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (2-8) and sophomore Bridget Barry (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) combined to no hit the Bears. McTiernan struck out four and walked one in the first three innings. Barry was perfect in the final two innings.
  • Freshman right fielder Eva Blaney (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore catcher Kayla Kean (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Ella Kean finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
