Bears fall to Hawks on Senior Day

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The New Paltz Hawks (22-8, 11-1) took both wins against the SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-17, 2-10) in Saturday's doubleheader at Maxcy softball field. The Hawks took game one 13-3 and shut out the Bears in game two, 9-0. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
  • Junior first baseman Ella Sharrock (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) had an RBI double in the top of the first inning. Senior center fielder Kelsey O'Brien (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) scored. 
  • The Hawks added 12 runs on six hits and five walks at the top of the second. 
  • Sophomore Bears' right fielder Hannah Fagan (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) came home on an RBI single from junior designated player Emily Birminghan (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) to put Potsdam on the board at the bottom of the second. 
  • Freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) recorded the second run for Potsdam on an error in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore pinch runner Mia Cooper (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) came home on a sacrifice bunt by freshman first baseman Kaidance Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette) to score the final run of the contest. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1)
  • Senior pitcher Alex Frenza (11-5) earned the win for New Paltz, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out eight batters. 
  • For Potsdam, Birmingham (5-8) was credited with the loss, allowing 13 runs on six hits and five walks in 1.1 innings. Sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) gave up three hits in 3.3 innings. 
  • St. Clair and Horne were perfect from behind the plate, going 2-for-2. 
  • Hawks' senior second baseman Lauren Serrao (Rock Tavern, N.Y./Valley Central) led New Paltz, going 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)
  • New Paltz put up three runs in the top of the first inning. Junior shortstop Ava Thys (Fairfax, Va./James W. Robinson Secondary) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Maddie Anderson (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). Sharrock and sophomore designated player Mallory Rohon (Southington, Conn./Southington) came in on a single by junior catcher Brianna Hardwick (Albany, N.Y./Shaker). 
  • Senior Bears' captain Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) singled in the bottom of the first, recording a hit for Potsdam. 
  • The Hawks added two runs in the top of the third. Sharrock recorded the fourth run. Serrao came home on a bases-loaded walk. O'Brien scored on a single by Serrao, and sophomore pinch runner Meredith Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) scored on a pass ball at the top of the fourth. Thys added an eighth for the Hawks at the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Anderson. Anderson came in on a single from O'Brien to close out the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2)
  • Sophomore New Paltz pitcher Leah Gunsett (4-1) earned the five-inning shutout, allowing one hit and three walks, striking out 10. 
  • Birmingham (5-9) picked up the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits and eight walks in 3.1 innings. Horne allowed two runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. 
  • Rosick led the Bears in hitting, going 1-for-2. 
  • Thys and Serrao both went 2-for-2 behind the plate.

SENIOR DAY
Between games, the Potsdam softball team celebrated four graduating players: senior captain and shortstop Alexys Rosick, junior catcher/outfielder Sara Richards (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley), junior captain and outfielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), and senior outfielder Lily Gray (Chaumont, N.Y./Thousand Islands). 
The Bears will host St. Lawrence on Tuesday at 3 & 5 p.m. and Delhi on Wednesday at 2 & 4 p.m.
