POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (10-18) earned a split with St. Lawrence University (14-12) on Tuesday afternoon. The Saints took game one 13-0, but the Bears bounced back to claim game two 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- The Saints scored four times in the top of the first. Junior third baseman Allison Kloft (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Tesoro) had an RBI single and sophomore left fielder Marina Juan (Bolton, Conn./East Catholic) followed with a two-run single.
- Kloft picked up another RBI on a ground out in the top of the second.
- The Saints added three runs in the top of the third. Senior catcher Emily Crain (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) drove in two with a single.
- SLU put the game away with five more in the top of the fourth. The big blast was a two-run homer from Juan that easily cleared the left field fence.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
- Sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (3-7) allowed 13 runs, seven earned, on 16 hits and two walks.
- Freshman Madison Smith (Belmont, N.Y./Belmont) (5-0) one-hit the Bears and struck out three.
- Junior center fielder Caelen Jahnle (Ashburnham, Mass./Lawrence Academy) was 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI for the Saints.
- Juan was 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI, including the homer.
- Crain was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run and Kloft went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- The Bears jumped out in front for good on a two-run single by junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) in the bottom of the first. Senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) and junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) scored on the play.
- Sophomore shortstop Abby Gallas (Newcastle, Wash./Liberty) got the Saints back within one with an RBI double that plated senior right fielder Layne Fritz (Stafford, Va./Mountain View).
- Birmingham and SLU sophomore pitcher Hannah Reardon (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) pitched in and out of trouble for the rest of the contest, but they kept the hitters at bay.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
- Birmingham (6-9) earned her sixth victory of the season, allowing the one run on five hits and striking out one.
- Reardon (1-4) allowed the two runs on eight hits. She struck out one.
- Wasserman finished 1-for-3 with the two RBI. Rosick was 3-for-4 with a run. Birmingham was 1-for-2. Sophomore catcher Kalissa Young (Winthrop, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) was 2-for-3. Junior left fielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) went 1-for-3.
