Bears split with Broncos

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team (11-19) took game one against SUNY Delhi (9-16) in Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader 9-1 at Maxcy Softball Field, with the Broncos taking game two 6-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
  • The Bears put up three runs in the bottom of the opening inning as freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) and junior designated player Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y/Pulaski) scored on a double by junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa). Sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) came home on a wild pitch. 
  • The Broncos' only run of the game was scored in the top of the third as sophomore right fielder Samantha Martin (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) hit an RBI single, bringing in sophomore catcher Adrienne Neff (Oriskany Falls, N.Y./Waterville Central). 
  • St. Clair hit her fourth homer of the season in the bottom of the third to put Potsdam up 4-1. Horne scored her second run of the contest on a fielder's choice, and Wasserman came home on a groundout by freshman first baseman Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette), making it 6-1. 
  • St. Clair and sophomore pinch runner Mia Cooper (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) added two more runs for the Bears in the bottom of the fourth, driven in by Horne. 
  • Potsdam scored its ninth run as senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) came home on a St. Clair single, closing out the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1)
  • Horne (4-7) earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits, and struck out four batters. 
  • Delhi's freshman pitcher Mikayla Wright (Grand Gorge, N.Y./Roxbury) (2-4) was credited with the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits and three walks in 3.0 innings. Junior pitcher Angelina Dickel (Franklinville, N.J./GCIT) allowed one run on four hits in 1.2 innings. 
  • St. Clair was a perfect 4-for-4 behind the plate, with three runs, two RBI, and a homer. 
  • Wasserman was 2-for-3, scoring one run and driving in two. 
  • Junior third baseman Cayla Moroni (Ossining, N.Y./Maria Regina) led the Broncos' offense, going 2-for-2. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2) 
  • Delhi opened scoring in the top of the third inning as Moroni doubled, bringing home Dickel. 
  • Rosick scored for the Bears in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Birmingham. 
  • Potsdam added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore catcher Kalissa Young (Winthrop, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) came in on an RBI single by Rosick. Rosick scored on a single by Birmingham. 
  • At the top of the sixth, junior designated player Carolina Watson (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) brought home sophomore center fielder Carly Bernard (Buena, N.J./ACIT) for the Broncos' second run of the contest. Dickel hit a grand slam to put Delhi up 6-3. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2) 
  • Birmingham (6-10) picked up the loss, allowing six runs on thirteen hits and three walks. She struck out three batters in the contest. 
  • Broncos' sophomore pitcher Alethea Ferrara (Delhi, N.Y./Delaware Academy) (2-6) earned the win, giving up three runs on eight hits. 
  • Rosick led the Bears' offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman second baseman Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) was 2-for-3. 
  • Dickel went a perfect 3-for-3 behind the plate, recording four RBI and two runs.

The Bears travel to Plattsburgh for a doubleheader on Friday with games at 3 & 5 p.m.
