PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (12-20, 3-11 SUNYAC) split with Plattsburgh State (13-16, 7-7) in a SUNYAC doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals walked off in game one with a 2-1 win. The Bears rebounded to defeat Plattsburgh 3-2 in the finale. Freshman center fielder
Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) homered in each game for the Bears. Her six home runs are third best in program history and two shy of the Bears' single-season record.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- Game one was a pitcher's duel.
- The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when St. Clair homered to left field to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
- Cardinals shortstop Sara Isaacs was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the fifth to force in the tying run.
- Allison Isaacs led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the left field line. Bears junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) retired the next two hitters before Sara Isaacs struck again. She singled to left and Allison Isaacs came around to score as the Cardinals walked it off.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
- Despite the result, Birmingham (6-11) pitched one of her finest games of the season. She allowed just two runs on five hits, while striking out a career-high eight and walking five.
- Morgan Omerod (7-6) held Potsdam to one run and scattered four hits while striking out nine.
- Senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) was 2-for-4 for the Bears. Junior shortstop Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) was 1-for-3.
- Sara Isaacs was 1-for-2 with both RBI and a walk. Allison Isaacs was 1-for-3 with a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- St. Clair picked up where she left off in game one, hitting a two-run shot in the top of the first to score Rosick.
- St. Clair tripled to right center to lead off the top of the sixth. Sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) then brought her in on a ground out to extend the lead to 3-0.
- Second baseman Meghan Stork got the Cardinals on the board with a triple in the bottom of the sixth. Sara Isaacs followed with a single to bring in Stork and get Plattsburgh within 3-2.
- The Cardinals had runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the second before Horne slammed the door, inducing a ground out to short.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
- Horne (5-7) allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out a career-high five for another strong outing.
- Cady Wheat (3-6) allowed two runs on five hits in the first five innings. Evelyn Paul allowed one run on two hits in the final two innings.
- St. Clair was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Rosick, freshman second baseman Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus), Birmingham, junior left fielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and freshman designated player Cassidy Richards (Jay, N.Y./AuSable Valley) each had a hit.
- Stork finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Sara Isaacs was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
- The Bears are now 4-2 in their last six games with Plattsburgh
