Bears split twin bill with Golden Knights

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (13-21) split a doubleheader with Clarkson University (7-26) on Monday afternoon. The Bears took game one 5-3 before falling 9-1 in game two.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • Junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) put the Bears up 2-0 in the top of the first with a single to score freshman second baseman Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore)
  • Senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) scored on an error in the top of the second. Kuttruff then scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • Junior right fielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) scored Potsdam's fifth run in the top of the third on a Rosick sacrifice fly.
  • The Golden Knights got on the board in the bottom of fourth with a solo homer from first baseman Lexi Rydelek.
  • Designated player Emily Bulone singled to score shortstop Ivy Borkoski in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Second baseman Isabel Haspil doubled in right fielder Ryleigh Fontana in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 5-3.
  • Bears sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) retired Clarkson in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the threat and the contest.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Horne (6-7) allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out two to pick up her third straight win.
  • Ry Garcia (0-4) allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in 1.1 innings. Bella Hotchkiss gave up just one run on seven hits in the last 5.2 innings. She struck out six.
  • Kuttruff finished 2-for-3 with two runs. St. Clair was 2-for-3 with a run. Freshman first baseman Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette) was also 2-for-3. Horne was 2-for-4 and Wasserman was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Rosick was 0-for-3 but had an RBI and a run.
  • Fontana went 2-for-2 for the Golden Knights. Rydelek was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Haspil was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Clarkson struck for seven runs on five hits and an error to break the game open in the bottom of the second. Third baseman Genevieve Mucitelli started the inning off with a two-run homer. Rydelek made it 5-0 with a two-run double. Haspil followed with the same.
  • The Golden Knights added two more in the bottom of the seventh on a single from designated player Kelsea Flanagan and heads up baserunning from Fontana.
  • Rosick drove in the Bears' only run in the top of the fifth with a single to bring in sophomore catcher Kalissa Young (Winthrop, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central).
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) (6-12) allowed nine runs, though just four were earned, on 10 hits and three walks. She struck out three.
  • Avery McDonald (2-5) allowed the one run on six hits to pick up the win.
  • Rosick led the Bears offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Young was 2-for-2 with a run scored. St. Clair was 1-for-3 and Pleat finished 1-for-2.
  • Rydelek went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI to lead Clarkson. Flanagan was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Haspil was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI. Mucitelli finished 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

The Bears host SUNY Poly for doubleheader in their home finale beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
