Wildcats sweep Bears, Rosick sets stolen base record

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Poly (15-21) swept a doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (13-23) on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats took game one 4-0 and game two 14-5. Senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) stole five bases on the afternoon, giving her the program single-season record of 26. She currently leads the SUNYAC in swipes.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • The Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the first. Junior right fielder Kelly Powell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) drove in two runs with a one out triple. Senior catcher Joely Welpe (Utica, N.Y./Proctor) followed with a sacrifice fly.
  • SUNY Poly scored the contest's final run in the top of the sixth on a single from freshman designated player Taylor Scranton (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford).
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
  • Junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) (6-13) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks. She struck out one.
  • Sophomore Annabella Mondello (Poland, N.Y./Poland) struck out nine hitters and allowed just four hits for the shutout.
  • Powell finished 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Scranton was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Rosick, sophomore first baseman Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West), junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and junior right fielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) each had hits for the Bears.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • SUNY Poly started the finale with five runs on six hits in the top of the first. Welpe had a two run double during the rally.
  • The Wildcats added six runs on three hits and four walks in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 11-0. Hagues had a two-run single in the inning.
  • SUNY Poly added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
  • The Bears scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Wasserman drove in freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) with a single. Freshman first baseman Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette) followed with a two-run single that brought in Wasserman and Horne. Junior pinch runner Sara Richards (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) scored on a wild pitch.
  • Potsdam added a final run on a double from Wasserman to bring in Birmingham.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Horne (6-8) allowed 14 runs, 11 earned, on 16 hits and five walks.
  • Mondello started game two as well and threw two hitless innings. Hagues (5-10) allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks in the last three innings to pick up the win.
  • Wasserman was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Cronin was 2-for-2 with an RBI. St. Clair, Birmingham and Pleat also had hits.

The Bears head to Buffalo State on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
