Bengals sweep Bears

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo State Bengals (23-11, 10-6) swept the SUNY Potsdam softball team (13-25, 3-13) in Friday's doubleheader. The Bengals shut out the Bears in game one 8-0, and took game two 9-1. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1) 
  • The Bengals were first on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run homer by Izzy Pezdek. 
  • Buffalo State added three runs in the bottom of the third. Pezdek came in to score on a single by Lexi Quagliana. Quagliana added a fifth run as Natalie Burck singled. Megan Galbraith brought Burck home on an extra-base hit. 
  • Ella Stewart scored the seventh for the Bengals on an error in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Galbraith came home on a fielder's choice to end the game 8-0. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1) 
  • Junior Bears' pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) (6-14) was credited with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in 2.0 innings. Sophomore Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) allowed five runs on seven hits, striking out two batters in 2.2 innings. 
  • For Buffalo State, Pezdek (12-4) picked up the win in the circle, allowing zero runs on three hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. 
  • Freshman Potsdam first baseman Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette) was 1-for-1 behind the plate. Sophomore catcher Kalissa Young (Winthrop, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) and senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) were both 1-for-2. 
  • Quagliana and Galbraith each went 3-for-3. Pezdek was 2-for-3. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2) 
  • Buffalo State scored twice at the bottom of the first inning. Ashley Jedrich came in on a single by Pezdek. Stewart scored on an error. 
  • Mya Hurley grounded out, scoring Deme Kellogg for Buffalo State at the bottom of the second. Kellogg brought Burck home in the bottom of the third to make it 4-0. 
  • The Bengals added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by Erin Paolilli. 
  • The Bears scored their first run of the contest in the top of the sixth inning. Junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) came home on an error. 
  • Buffalo State had three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the contest 9-1. Pezdek hit her second homer of the doubleheader. Quagliana tripled, bringing in Paolilli, then came home on a single by Burck. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2) 
  • Freshman Bears' pitcher Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) (1-3) recorded the loss, letting in nine runs on 13 hits and two walks. 
  • Buffalo State pitcher Madison Lucas (4-3) got the win, allowing one run on three hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. 
  • Cronin was 1-for-2 behind the plate. Wasserman and freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) were 1-for-3. 
  • Paolilli went 3-for-4. Kellogg was 2-for-3. Pezdek and Quagliana were 2-for-4.
