Blue Devils slip past Bears in OT

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Fredonia Blue Devils (7-7, 3-3) scored a last-minute game-winner in overtime to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-9, 1-5) 9-8 on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Bears were first on the board in the opening quarter as senior captain Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) scored less than two minutes into the contest, unassisted. Fredonia scored twice in the final six minutes, as sophomore attack Mieley Baran (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) and junior attack Leah Kunisch (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) both found the back of the net on the player advantage. 
  • Sophomore Bears' attack Ava Murphy (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) tied the game 2-2, assisted by sophomore attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena), at 8:31 in the second quarter. Fredonia had two goals in the quarter, as freshman midfielder Katie O'Brien (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and senior midfielder Megan Karalus (Eden, N.Y./Eden) put the Blue Devils ahead 4-2. Senior Potsdam goalie Olivia Minarich (Albany, N.Y./Albany) saved a free position shot to end the half. 
  • Potsdam scored three unanswered goals to start the third quarter. Senior captain Auna Shadle (Massena, N.Y./Massena) netted her first of the contest, assisted by MacWilliams at 14:15. MacWilliams converted on the free position chance to tie the game at 13:39. Thompson added a fifth goal at 7:13, assisted by sophomore midfielder Maggie Akin (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam). The Blue Devils got one back as Kunisch tied it 5-5. 20 seconds later, Akin scored unassisted. Karalus made it 6-6 at 4:58. MacWilliams completed the hat trick to conclude the scoring in the third. 
  • Baran netted her second of the contest on the player advantage at 9:57 in the fourth, tying the game for the sixth time. Thompson recorded her second, assisted by MacWilliams, with 3:15 left in the contest. Minarich made two strong saves in the final five minutes to keep the Bears in it. Kunisch tied the contest at eight apiece with 1:41 remaining, sending the game to overtime. 
  • Neither team managed to get the sudden victory goal in the first five-minute period of OT. With 0.1 seconds left in the second period of OT, Baran netted the game-winner for Fredonia.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Blue Devils had a slight shot advantage with 31 to Potsdam's 28, and led 11-10 in draw controls. 
  • MacWilliams led the Bears with three goals and two assists, along with four draw controls. Thompson had two goals and an assist. 
  •  Minarich stopped 13 shots in the contest. 
  • Baran and Kunisch each had three goals and an assist for the Blue Devils. Kunisch recorded seven draw controls. 
  • Senior Fredonia goalie Jessica Kowalski (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) made seven saves.

The Bears travel to Oswego next Wednesday, April 15. The contest kicks off at 4:00 p.m.
