Bears rough up Hawks on the road, 16-9

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (7-4, 2-2 SUNYAC) overpowered SUNY New Paltz (3-9, 1-3) 16-9 on Saturday afternoon. Senior attackman Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) had a career-high six goals and senior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made 13 saves to up his career wins record to 22.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore attackman Braydon Goddard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) scored the lone goal of the first quarter at 3:49.
  • Potsdam reeled off the first seven goals of the second quarter and led 8-1 at the half. Senior attackman Billy Kozloski had three goals and Goddard netted his second. Sophomore midfielder Preston Daniels (Peru, N.Y./Peru), senior defender Alex Farben-Griggs (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) and senior attackman Rowisonkies Barnes (Akwesasne, N.Y./The Hill Academy) had the other three goals. Daniels, freshman midfielder Rowan Oakes (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) and senior captain Morgan Fox (Clayton, N.Y./Thousand Islands) picked up assists.
  • The teams split the third quarter's 10 goals. A 4-2 run by the Hawks got them within 10-5 at 8:36. However, Potsdam scored three of the final four and led 13-6 after 45 minutes. Kozloski scored three more times and Barnes and Daniels each added another. Barnes had two assists and senior captain Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and Goddard each had one.
  • Each team scored three final goals in the fourth quarter for the 16-9 finish. Goddard scored twice and Barnes had the other. Oakes and senior captain Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) each had assists.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Barnes also finished with six points on three goals and three assists. Goddard posted a season-high four goals to go with an assist.
  • Daniels had a season-high three points on two goals and an assist.
  • Costello had another strong day in the faceoff circle, winning 20 of his 28 attempts and collecting 12 ground balls.
  • Senior defender Ryan Wassmer (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) collected four ground balls.
  • Hawks goalie Jacob Kenny made 14 saves.
  • Nick Darcangelo led New Paltz with four goals, while Jack McLaughlin and Finn Smith each had two goals and an assist.

The Bears are back in action in one week when they travel to SUNY Morrisville for a 1 p.m. contest.
