Bears tame Mustangs, 13-9

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse (8-4, 3-2) team tamed the Morrisville Mustangs (7-6, 1-4) 13-9 on Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Morrisville got off to a 2-0 lead in the opening quarter. Noah Taylor scored at 13:27. Dean Mohammed added a second at 11:30. Bears' senior defenseman Ryan Wassmer (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) netted the first for Potsdam at 9:40. John Blair had the Mustangs' third two minutes later. The Bears answered with four goals to close out the quarter. Senior defenseman Alex-Farben Griggs (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) scored, assisted by senior captain Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy). Senior attackman Crayton Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River) tied the game 3-3, assisted by senior captain Jakob Lynch (Alexandria Bay, N.Y./Alexandria). Sophomore midfielder Preston Daniels (Peru, N.Y./Peru) added a fourth, and Farben-Griggs netted his second, with an assist from sophomore attackman Braydon Goddard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs). 
  • Senior attackman Rowisonkies Barnes (Akwesasne, N.Y./The Hill Academy) got a sixth for Potsdam at 11:49 in the second quarter. Senior captain Tommy Storrin (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) had the assist. Morrisville scored twice in 40 seconds through man-up and even-strength goals by Kyan Dohn. Costello netted a seventh for the Bears off the faceoff win at 4:55. Dohn made it 7-6 with his third of the contest. Potsdam once again concluded the quarter with multiple unanswered goals, as freshman defenseman Damyn LeClair (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored unassisted. Freshman midfielder Ronin Oakes (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) added a ninth, assisted by junior captain Morgan Fox (Clayton, N.Y./Thousand Islands). 
  • There was no scoring until the 5:24 mark in the third quarter as senior Potsdam midfielder Nick Long (Elbridge, N.Y./Jordan-Elbridge) netted a 10th goal on the man-up opportunity. Goddard had the only other goal of the quarter with 47 seconds remaining. Barnes had the assist. 
  • Senior Bears' attackman Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, putting Potsdam up 12-6, assisted by LeClair. The Mustangs added three goals in three and a half minutes. Mohammed netted his second of the night at 8:19, man-up. Dohn got his fourth 20 seconds later. Jason Tedeschi added another man-up goal at 4:46. Barnes had the final goal of the contest at 3:42 as the Bears claimed the 13-9 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Bears outshot the Mustangs 49-27.
  • Costello dominated in the faceoff circle, 22-3, collecting 12 ground balls. 
  • Barnes had three points on two goals and an assist. Farben-Griggs, LeClair, and Costello each finished with two points. 
  • Senior Bears' goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) stopped seven shots in the contest. 
  • Morrisville goalie Dunton Blake made 14 saves. 
  • Dohn led all players with five points on four goals and one assist. Mohammed had four points on two goals and two assists.
