Golden Flyers strike early to down Bears in season opener, 3-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Nazareth University (1-0) scored twice in the first 15 minutes en route to a 3-1 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (0-1) in the season opener on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Mason Zambrano (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored his first career goal for the Bears.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Flyers picked up a red card in the contest's first minute.
  • Samuel Burton put Nazareth up 1-0 13:18 into the contest with an assist from Braden Callahan.
  • Just 1:45 later, Mason Stanco doubled the lead with a helper from Joey Weaver.
  • With just under 30 minutes to go, junior forward Thomas Wendel (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) appeared to get the Bears on the board with a header, but he was ruled offsides.
  • Potsdam continued to press in the following minutes and finally broke through in the 67th minute. Zambrano knocked home a cross from junior Kyan Tiede (Leicester, N.Y./York) at the left post.  
  • Nazareth answered at 75:44 with Burton's second marker of the day to clinch the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The shots were even at 14 apiece.
  • Potsdam had five corner kicks to Nazareth's three.
  • Junior goalie James Kelm (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) made one save for the Bears and Bryan Tirado finished with five stops to earn the win.
  • The meeting was the teams' first since September 7, 1985. The Golden Flyers lead the series 2-0-1.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears host Keuka College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in their season opener.
