Valiants edge Bears at Plattsburgh Tourney, 3-2

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (1-2-1) rallied from deficits twice before bowing to Manhattanville University (2-0-2) 3-2 in the first round of the Plattsburgh State Holiday Inn Express Cardinal Classic.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Roberto Velasquez-Orsorio opened the scoring at 26:53 of the first half to put the Valiants up.
  • Junior Logan Bush (Newcomb, N.Y./Newcomb) tied the game nearly 10 minutes later at 36:48 with a shot from the right side of the box.
  • Alec Pineda put Manhattanville back in front at 43:07 with an assist from Nickolas Pagan and the Valiants led 2-1 at the break.
  • Potsdam got even again at 65:46 as sophomore forward Wyatt Mokey (Manhattan, N.Y./Humanities Preparatory Academy) buried a feed from junior midfielder Kyan Tiede (Leicester, N.Y./York).
  • The Valiants jumped back in front for good at 69:03 on a goal from Jacob Mazza. Tiernan McLaughlin had the assist.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Manhattanville outshot Potsdam 10-9, but the Bears finished with a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
  • Senior goalkeeper James Kelm (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) made five saves for Potsdam.
  • Valiants goalie Dwayne Brown allowed a goal and made five saves in the first 59:56. Jesse James de Ruiter earned the win in relief, allowing a goal and making no saves in the last 30:04.
  • Manhattanville leads the all-time series 1-0-1.
