PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-2-1) shut out the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (0-4) 5-0 on the final day of the Plattsburgh State Holiday Inn Express Cardinal Classic. Junior forward
Thomas Wendel (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) scored the eighth and ninth goals of his career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wendel opened the scoring at 12:50 with a shot to the low right corner of the net. Sophomore forward Wyatt Mokey (Manhattan, N.Y./Humanities Preparatory School) picked up the assist.
- Junior defender Wiley Dawson-Beilby (Voorheesville, N.Y./Voorheesville) doubled the lead off a Potsdam corner kick at 19:54. It was his first career goal. Junior midfielder Kyan Tiede (Leicester, N.Y./York) assisted on the goal.
- Wendel notched his second marker at 27:45, burying a feed from freshman midfielder Mason Zambrano (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck).
- Junior forward Logan Bush (Newcomb, N.Y./Newcomb) made the most of a penalty kick at 33:16 and the Bears took a 4-0 lead into the break.
- Zambrano netted his second career tally at 56:42 with an assist from freshman midfielder Hunter Rasmussen (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa). It was Rasmussen's first collegiate point.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Potsdam outshot MCLA 21-5 and had an 11-6 edge in corner kicks.
- Junior goalie Sam Allen (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made three saves in the first 82 minutes to pick up his first career win. Freshman Tom Wameling (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) didn't face a shot in the last eight minutes in his first collegiate action.
- Trailblazers goalie Oliver Le Lacheur finished with five stops.
- Potsdam is now 2-0-2 in the all-team series with MCLA.
- The five goals are the most scored by the Bears in a contest in nearly three seasons.
