POTSDAM, N.Y.—Sixth-ranked St. Lawrence University (6-0-1) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-3-1) 4-1 on Tuesday night at Maxcy Turf Field. Sophomore forward
Wyatt Mokey (Manhattan, N.Y./Humanities Preparatory Academy) scored for the Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints pressed from the outset earning several corner kicks.
- SLU finally broke through at 20:14. Senior midfielder Nicholas Petrone (Saddle Brook, N.J./Paramus Catholic) launched a free kick just outside the box on the left side. Freshman defender Juliano Masella (Montreal, Quebec/Choate Rosemary Hall) headed the ball into the left corner of the net.
- Just 3:04 into the second half, the Saints doubled their lead. Junior forward Grant Gilmer (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) had his shot deflected past Bears senior goalie Sam Allen (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt). Senior forward Baker Diaz (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prospect) and senior midfielder Dennis Argueta (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) had the assists.
- 3:11 later, Diaz chipped the ball ahead to Petrone and he buried it to make it 3-0.
- SLU scored a fourth goal at 63:04. Gilmer sent a corner kick from the left side of the net and sophomore defender Jack Greenwood (Waitsfield, Vt./Harwood Union) cut in front and headed the ball in.
- The Bears got on the board at 72:32. Junior forward JJ Williams (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) sent the ball ahead to junior midfielder Kyan Tiede (Leicester, N.Y./York). In one motion, he tipped the ball ahead to Mokey who fired it past senior goalie Zach Amato (Woburn, N.Y./Brooks School).
