Box Score Potsdam, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory over Wells College. The Bears, who have not allowed a goal in 2010, dominated the Express at both ends of the field.
Potsdam controlled the play from the outset, slanting the field in the direction of the Wells net and slowly building offensive pressure. The Bears broke through in the 18th minute when a cross bounced off Express junior goalkeeper Megan Lawrence (Scipio Center, N.Y./Cayuga) and Potsdam junior forward
Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) was there to bury her second goal of the season. The Bears outshot Wells 6-2 in the first half, but was unable to pad the lead.
In the second half, the Potsdam offense lifted its play and rarely allowed the ball out of the Wells end. At the 65:39 mark, senior forward
Cortney Poirier (Brushton, N.Y./Brushton-Moira) took control of a loose ball in front of the net and set up junior midfielder
Jess Mehm (Schroon Lake, N.Y./Schroon Lake) to give the Bears a 2-0 advantage. Nearly 12 minutes later, Poirier put the game away, driving home a cross from junior midfielder
Stephanie Simons (Stratford, Ontario/St. Michaels) off a corner kick.
Potsdam junior goalkeepers
Caitlin Titus (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) and Kim Callahan (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) each played a half and made one to team up for the shutout. Lawrence finished with three saves for the Express (0-2).
Potsdam Head Coach Tim Moody is very pleased to see the way his team is coming together, especially the goalkeepers.
“I'm very happy with the way the new players are starting to gel with the veterans,” said Moody. “And again tonight both goalkeepers were very good in organizing the defense in front of them.”
Next, the Bears head across town to take on rival Clarkson University at 4 p.m. on Sept. 9. Potsdam is undefeated (1-0-1) in its last two meetings with the Golden Knights, including a 3-0 victory last October.
