BUFFALO, N.Y.—Senior captain Annmarie Lewis scored twice to lead the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (1-1, 1-1 ECAC West) to a 3-2 road victory at Buffalo State (1-2, 0-1) on Friday night. Bears senior captain Caitlin Manahan scored Potsdam's other goal and junior goaltender Jen Conophy turned aside 23 shots for the win.

The Bears jumped on the Bengals right out of the gate as sophomore forward Jenn Crawford set up Lewis just 4:58 into the opening period. Buffalo State answered on its first power play of the contest at the 12-minute mark. Christine Williams evened the score on assists from Brianna Murphy and Lauren Mallo. With 56 seconds remaining in the first period, Manahan scored an unassisted goal to give the Bears the lead for good.

Potsdam's defense was very sharp in the second period, holding the Bengals to just four shots and killing off two power plays. At the 2:28 mark, Lewis scored the eventual game-winner with an assist from freshman forward Izzy Fayerman. The Bears carried the 3-1 advantage into the second intermission.

Buffalo State turned up the pressure in the final stanza, outshooting Potsdam 9-6 thanks in part to two power plays. With just over four minutes remaining, Bengal Rio Flynn struck on the man-advantage to cut the lead to 3-2. Murphy and Courtney Carnes assisted on the goal. Buffalo State pulled goalie Jordan Lee twice in the closing minutes, but was unable to find the equalizer with the extra attacker.

Lee finished with 20 saves for the Bengals. Potsdam was 0-3 on the power play and Buffalo State finished 2-5.

“I'm obviously very happy with the outcome,” said Bears Head Coach Jay Green. “It was a good night in terms of effort and execution. Annmarie Lewis had an exceptional game and Katie Komsa played very well too.”

The Bears and Bengals square off again tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in Buffalo.
