Bears hammer Wildcats to claim College Cup Title

Box Score
POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-0) scored four second half goals to down Cazenovia College (1-1) 6-0 and claim the inaugural Potsdam Women's College Cup 6-0. Six different Bears scored and freshman goalkeeper Shannon Weader recorded the shutout victory in her first collegiate game. Sophomore midfielder Kate Clauss was named the tournament most valuable player.

Potsdam was all over the Wildcats from the start, peppering Cazenovia freshman goalie Breanne Warner with shot after shot. Clauss drew first blood in the 7th minute on a long shot that went off Warner's hands. Sophomore midfielder Kristin Webster assisted on the goal. Fifty seconds later junior midfielder Ashley Thayer made it 2-0 Bears after burying a loose ball in front of the net. The Bears pressure was relentless as they carried the two-goal and 28-1 shot advantage into the break.

Freshman midfielder Summer Bader extended the lead to 3-0 with her first career goal on another helper from Webster at the 53:45 mark. Freshman defender Chloe Hay set up classmate Jess Sterns 10 minutes later, marking the first collegiate points for both players. The Potsdam onslaught slowed slightly through the middle of the second half before igniting for two final goals in 25 seconds. Freshman forward Emilie Ross scored with a header on a pass from fellow freshman Katie LaVoie at 81:53. At 82:18, Ross set up freshman Brenna Vukelic to cap the scoring at 6-0. Each player recorded their first points on the two goals.

In goal, Warner, who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with 21 saves. Weader had an easier day, making a difficult diving save on the only shot she faced. Weader and freshman Jaime Durant were named the top goalkeepers of the tournament and senior forward Heather Johnson was the tourney's top scorer.

“I thought we came out with a lot of energy and intensity,” said Bears Head Coach Mark Misiak. “We dictated the tempo of the game from the first whistle. I was really impressed with how many goal-scoring chances we created. It meant a lot to the girls to win our home tournament and I'm thrilled for them that we could bring it home in front of our own fans. I'm very happy that all of our players got chances to play in both games this weekend and that a lot of players netted their first college goal.”

The Bears look to keep their momentum rolling next weekend when they travel to Massachusetts for the Wellesley Invitational. Potsdam faces Babson on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. and then battles the host Blue at 1 p.m. the following afternoon.

Hawks Blank Eagles in College Cup Consolation

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Hilbert College Hawks (1-1) defeated the Green Mountain College Eagles (0-2) in the consolation round of the SUNY Potsdam Women's Soccer College Cup. Junior forward Robbi Bailey (Cadyville, N.Y./Saranac) led the attack with two goals to boost the Hawks to a 3-0 win.

Hilbert's solid passing and ball control highlighted the first half. The Hawks started the game quickly with a through ball by Nicole Blair (Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) to Bailey, but Eagle freshman goalie Kim Simonetti (Salem, Mass./North Shore Technical) was able to smother the attempt. The Hawks wore down the Eagles defense and put contant pressure on Simonetti. Hilbert generated a good opportunity in the 18th minute on an errant clear by Green Mountain. Junior midfielder Sarah Schmidt (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) snuck one by Simonetti off of a pass from junior defender Mary Mabon (Marion, N.Y./Marion/Jamestown CC) to put the Hawks up at the 22:51 mark. The Eagles responded with a quick run off the foot of freshman defender Sara Tucker (Alford, Mass./Monument Mountain), but Hawk freshman goalie Erin Smith (Woodburne, N.Y./Tri-Valley) shut her down. A few minutes later, Schmidt connected with Bailey who placed a perfect ball in the top right corner of the goal to give Hilbert a two-goal lead. Again the Eagles answered with a chance of their own. Junior midfielder Whitney VanBuren (Poultney, Vt./Poultney) fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, but Smith made the save. Shortly after, Green Mountain's Tucker sent a direct kick into the box but the Hawk defenders cleared the attempt. Hilbert concluded the half with a direct kick crossed into the box. However, Simonetti snagged the ball before a head could get on it. Hilbert ended the half with 2-0 lead and a 14-2 advantage in shots.

The second half started in the same manner as the first. Hilbert struck in the 49th minute on quick shot by Bailey to record her second goal of the match. Following the goal, Hilbert continued to put pressure on the opposition and maintain ball control on the Eagles side of the field. The Eagles were finally able to mount some pressure over the final 20 minutes, but were unable to close the gap. Green Mountain maintained pressure as the clock was winding down with a direct kick from senior defender Casey McGill (King of Prussia, Pa/Upper Merion). However, the Hawk defense was too much for the Eagles as time ran out.

Hilbert totaled 23 shots and Green Mountain finished with five. In goal, Smith had four saves in her shutout win. Simonetti turned aside 13 shots.

Schmidt and Eagle junior defender Johanna Douglas (Essex, Conn./Concord Academy) were named to the all-tournament team.
