ONEONTA, N.Y.—Hartwick College (4-2) built an 8-1 first half lead before hanging on for a 9-8 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-4) on Monday afternoon. Senior captain
Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) led the Bears with four goals and an assist. Fellow senior captain
Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) had two goals and two assists.
Lauren Rosenberg scored twice for the Hawks as they opened the contest with a 4-0 run. Newman got Potsdam on the board with a free-position goal at 18:07, but Hartwick answered with another 4-0 run. Rosenberg added another and Jennifer Darasz added two to give Hartwick the 8-1 advantage at 3:03. Lapinski buried her first on another free-position almost two minutes later and the Bears trailed 8-2 at the break.
Rosenberg netted her fourth of the day just 2:37 into the second half, but it was all Potsdam after that. The Bears closed the game on a 6-0 run. Senior midfielder

Kayla McCabe (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) set up Newman's second at 14:29. Lapinski scored a man-up goal with an assist from Newman at 11:16. Just 29 seconds later, she struck again with a helper from junior attack
Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) to close the gap to 9-6. Lapinski set up Stark to make it a two-goal game at 6:49. With 1:22 remaining, Newman fed junior defender
Danielle Pound (Henderson, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) to make it 9-8. Potsdam had one final push in the last minute, but couldn't find the equalizer.

Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) finished with six saves. Hartwick's Ashley Jablonowski made eight saves for the win.
Potsdam outshot Hartwick 21-18 and edged the Hawks in ground balls 22-20. Sophomore midfielder

The Bears are back in action this Saturday when they open SUNYAC play at Fredonia at 1 p.m.
