Lakers top Bears

OSWEGO, N.Y.—Oswego State (3-5, 1-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-6, 0-2) 17-6 on Tuesday afternoon. Senior captain Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) and junior attack Morgan Cook (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) led the Bears with two goals each and sophomore goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) made nine saves.
 
Oswego scored just 53 seconds into the contest, but Cook gave Potsdam a 2-1 with goals at 28:03 and 23:31. The Lakers then went on a 6-0 run over the next 12 minutes, which included three goals from Montana Garrett and two Kendall Appelbaum. Lapinski closed the gap to 7-3 with her first at the 9:16 mark. Oswego added two more tallies and took a 9-3 advantage into the break.
 
Gemma O'Kane and Lapinski traded the first two goals in the opening 1:41 of the second half. The Lakers followed with a 4-0 stretch, sparked by consecutive markers from Toni Laneve, to take a 12-4 lead with 23:12 to play. Senior captain Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) netted the Bears' fifth goal of the game with an assist from junior attack Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) at 19:57. She was answered by three different Lakers to make it a 17-5 lead at 5:23. Senior attack Mariah Pierce (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) closed the scoring at 17-6 with 1:48 to play.
 
Angela Ponto made 11 saves in goal for Oswego.
 
The Bears are back home on Saturday to begin a five-game homestand starting with Buffalo State at 1 p.m.
