POTSDAM, N.Y—The SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (12-13, 3-0 NECC) defeated NECC foe NVU-Johnson (3-13, 0-4 NECC) 3-0, before falling 3-1 to Elmira College (16-10, 2-3 UVC) on Saturday afternoon in Maxcy Hall Field House. D'Youville swept NVU-Johnson 3-0 in the neutral site contest.
The Bears surged past the Badgers by 25-11, 25-14 and 25-15 scores in the opener. Senior outside hitter
Joe Zimmerman (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led the Bears with 10 kills and a match-best six aces. Sophomore outside hitter
Tom Shemik (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) was close behind with nine kills and two digs. Senior libero
Keven Sanchez (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) posted eight digs and four assists. Senior setter
Alec Roy (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) chipped in 22 assists, two aces and four digs.
Junior opposite Zachary Anderson (Sister, O.R./Sister High School) tallied 11 kills and five digs for the Badgers. Senior libero Wyatt Moberg (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional) had seven digs and four kills, while sophomore setter Eli Harden (Artesia, N.M./Artesia High School) earned 21 assists and two digs.
Potsdam battled the Soaring Eagles in the second match, holding them to a fourth set but ultimately falling by 25-16, 21-25, 25-17, and 25-15 scores. Zimmerman added another 12 kills and eight digs to his totals. Junior outside hitter
Zaire Rogers (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) and sophomore middle
Jason Hendler (East Meadow, N.Y./ East Meadow) each had nine kills. Rogers also posted nine digs. Roy had another 30 assists, two kills and four digs.
Junior outside hitter Eric Johnson (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) led Elmira with 13 kills and two digs. Junior setter Oscar Munoz Trinidad (Jarabocoa, Dominican Republic/Cefam) and middle blocker Edwin Sosa (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Centro de Excelencia Profesional) followed right behind with 12 and 10 kills respectively. Munoz Trinidad also led the team in assists with 24 while setter Neiram Galan-Canales (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Eeba Pablo Casals) tallied 21 assists for the Soaring Eagles.
D'Youville University (6-9) beat the Badgers 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 20-25) and but fell to Elmira 3-2 (26-24, 23-25, 29-31, 25-23, 11-15) in the day's neutral site contests.
Prior to the game, Potsdam honored seniors Sanchez, Roy and
Kiernan Morgan (Lynbrook, N.Y./Valley Stream North) on Senior Day.
As the Bears are 8-2 in their last 10 matches and still undefeated in NECC play they look to critical contests next weekend. After a nonconference match at Wentworth Institute of Technology on Friday, they play conference games with Endicott College on Saturday and Nichols College on Sunday.
