Golden Knights take rivalry game from Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (9-1) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-3) 11-5 on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) scored twice for the Bears and senior captain Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) had a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Ben Fuchs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Calvary Christian) was impressive with 18 saves.
 
Sabastian Geiger opened the scoring with a goal at 12:45 of the first quarter. Rose countered with the next two to give Potsdam its lone lead of the game at 7:31. Matt Reilly netted the last two markers of the opening 15 minutes and Clarkson led 3-2.
 
Thomas Fiebich opened the second quarter with a man-up goal. Sophomore attack Cobie Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River) closed the gap to 4-3 at 8:56 with an assist from Talcott. Connor Holly and Geiger scored the last two goals of the half and Clarkson led 6-3 at the break.
 
Geiger added his third at 8:45 of the third quarter and Andrew Kearney made it 8-3 three minutes later. Talcott struck at 4:30 with an assist from freshman midfielder Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa). Senior captain Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) got Potsdam within 8-5 with five seconds left and the Bears were down three with 15 to play.
 
Clarkson got the only three goals of the fourth quarter. Bryan Penney scored twice and Kearney got the other goal as the Golden Knights closed out the six-goal victory.
 
Jacob Mattice earned the win in goal for Clarkson with 11 saves. Sophomore goalie Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) allowed a goal in the last 2:30 for the Bears.
 
Potsdam opens SUNYAC play at home on Saturday, when the Bears host SUNY Cortland at 3 p.m.
