Brockport downs Bears twice

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (9-9, 2-4 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (0-19, 0-8) in both ends of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Eagles took game one 8-3 and game two 10-0.

The Golden Eagles slowly built up their lead in game one, scoring in each of the first six innings. Golden Eagles junior first baseman Annie DiPirro (Lancaster, N.Y./Depew) drove in the first two runs of the game in the top of the first with a single. Bears senior catcher Hailey LaGiudice (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) got one back in the bottom of the first with a single that plated freshman centerfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union).

Brockport then added one in each of the next three innings. Junior centerfielder Madison Evarts (Niagara Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) had an RBI single in the second. Junior catcher Madison Ross (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) knocked in a run in the third with a ground out and senior second baseman Cameryn Duggan (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) had an RBI double in the fourth to make it 5-1. Ross added another RBI on a single in the fifth and a fielder's choice allowed the Golden Eagles to extend their lead to 8-1 in the top of the sixth.

Potsdam countered with two in the bottom of the sixth. Junior first baseman Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) homered to left field and freshman third baseman Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) drove in LaGiudice with a single to close the scoring.

Brockport graduate student pitcher Julia Palopoli (Hauppage, N.Y./Hauppauge) (2-1) earned the win after allowing three runs on seven hits in the first seven innings. Sophomore pitcher Roseland Stroh (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) allowed a hit and struck out one in the last inning. Senior Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) (0-9) went the distance for Potsdam, allowing seven earned runs on 15 hits.

Evarts was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Brockport. Duggan was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run. DiPirro was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Junior third baseman Amanda Blakely (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne) was 2-for-4 with two runs and sophomore right fielder Emma DeJesus (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) was 2-for-4 with a run.

Grottola finished 2-for-4 with a homer. Sophomore left fielder Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) was 2-for-3 with a run.

Brockport broke open game two with a six-run third inning. Senior first baseman Emily Willis-Nersinger (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and junior Morgan Skpowski (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) each had two run singles in the inning. After a sacrifice fly added a run in the top of the fourth, Dugan closed the scoring with a two-run triple in the top of the fifth.
