OSWEGO, N.Y.—Oswego State (8-17, 3-5 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (0-21, 0-10) in both ends of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Lakers took the opener 13-3 and the finale 9-4.
The Bears jumped out in front immediately in game one as junior first baseman
Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) led off with her third home run of the season. Freshman shortstop
Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) later reached on an error and scored on another one and Potsdam led 2-0 in the first.
The Lakers broke out in the bottom of the second, scoring seven times. Designated player Fiona Higgins had two-run double and second baseman Tai Smith had a three-run double during the rally. Oswego scored four more runs in the third inning, two coming off a single from shortstop Aleah Yaizzo. After the Lakers added two more in the fourth, Dobransky doubled in Potsdam's other run in the top of the fifth to plate junior third baseman

Smith was 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs. Catcher Zoe Mennig was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Third baseman Mattison Phinney went 2-fo-3 with two RBI.
Senior pitcher
Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) (0-10) allowed 11 runs on 10 hits in 2.2 innings for the Bears. Sophomore
Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) allowed an earned run on four hits in the last 1.1 innings. Maria Lutz (1-6) went the distance for the Lakers, allowing two earned runs on six hits in five innings.
Game two was a much tighter contest. Phinney scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning to give Oswego a 1-0 lead. Potsdam scored twice in the top of the fourth to grab a 2-1 advantage. Senior second baseman
Vanessa Brandt (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) tied the game on a wild pitch and freshman centerfielder
Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) drove in Bennett with a single to right. Another wild pitch scored pinch runner Adriana Marini to make it 2-2.
The Bears couldn't avoid another big inning as Oswego scored five times in the bottom of the fifth to go up 7-2. Graduate student first baseman Taylor DuBois had a two-run double. Mennig followed with an RBI single and Phinney knocked in two more with another single. Potsdam got two back in the top of the sixth as senior catcher
Hailey LaGiudice (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) launched her first homer to score Brandt and make it 7-4. However, the Lakers added insurance in the bottom of the inning as Mennig drove in Yaizzo with a sacrifice fly and Higgins plated DuBois with a single.
Brandt was 2-for-3 with two runs. LaGiudice was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI and Bennett was 1-for-3 with a run. DuBois finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Higgins was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Phinney finished 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Brown (0-11) allowed five earned runs on nine hits and struck out four in 4.2 innings. Ashley allowed a run on two hits in an inning and sophomore
Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) allowed two runs in a third of an inning. Higgins (5-7) went all seven for Oswego, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out 14.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at noon when they head to SUNY Cortland for a doubleheader.
