POTSDAM, N.Y.—A fast start from SUNY Oneonta (4-10, 3-4 SUNYAC) lifted the Red Dragons to a 17-8 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (5-8, 2-5) on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder
Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and freshman attackman
Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) each led the Bears with a goal and two assists, while Sophomore attackman
Cobie Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River) and freshman attackman
Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) each scored twice.
Sophomore attackman Luke Maslin (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) opened the scoring for the Red Dragons at 13:50.
Owen Walsh set up Cree's first goal 1:32 later. Oneonta then seized control of the contest with a 6-0 run. Freshman attackman Vincent Tirino (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Comsewogue) scored three of the goals, including one while a man-up. The Red Dragons led 7-1 after 15 minutes.
Peyton Walsh scored a man-up goal at 12:46 of the second quarter with an assist from freshman midfielder
Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central), but Oneonta answered again with three goals from three different players. Hughes scored at 5:36 with a helper from
Peyton Walsh to slow the run. After another Red Dragon goal, senior captain
Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) scored with a helper from
Peyton Walsh with a second left and Potsdam trailed 11-5 at the break.
Cree scored the first goal of the second half on a feed from
Owen Walsh to close the gap to five. However, Oneonta rattled off the next five straight to put the game out of reach at 16-5.
Owen Walsh scored an unassisted marker at 2:10 to begin a 3-0 Potsdam run.
Talcott set up fellow senior captain
Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) at 9:33 of the fourth quarter and Hughes buried his second at 7:14 with an assist from Miller to make it 16-8. Sophomore midfielder Matthew Kreig (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Comsewogue) scored the game's final goal for Oneonta with 4:51 left to close out the 17-8 final.
Senior
Ben Fuchs (Fort Lauderdale, N.Y./Calvary Christian Academy) made 12 saves and allowed 14 goals for Potsdam in the first 40:28. Sophomore
Collin Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) allowed three goals and stopped three shots in the other 19:32. Junior Luke Mignoli (Long Beach N.Y./Long Beach) picked up the win for the Red Dragons, making 10 saves and allowing eight goals in 56:54. Senior Jordan Berson (Old Bethpage, N.Y./JFK) stopped one shot in the last 3:06.
