Bears overcome Saxons in OT to give Pound first win

ALFRED, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (1-0) thwarted a late comeback by Alfred University (0-1) to defeat the Saxons 12-11 in overtime. The victory was the first as a Bear for new head coach Lindsey Pound '16.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior attack Tatiana Hillicke (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) opened the scoring at 10:27 of the first quarter. It was 1-1 after 15 minutes.
  • Alfred scored the first three goals of the second quarter, but the Bears answered with four of their own. It was 6-5 Potsdam at the half. Hillicke scored a man-up goal and freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) had two. Senior captain Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) and graduate student midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) also scored in the second.
  • The Bears opened the third quarter on a 4-2 run and led 10-7 at 1:03. However, the Saxons scored the final two of the quarter to trim the lead to 10-9. Senior defender Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) scored twice, while LaDue and graduate student defender Kalli Hewitt (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Schuylerville) had the other two goals.
  • Hewitt scored the first goal of the fourth quarter at 8:18, but Alfred got the final two of regulation to force overtime.
  • Thompson netted the game-winner at 2:09 of the extra session to give the Bears the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears edged the Saxons in shots (39-28), ground balls (41-32) and draw controls (14-12).
  • Thompson led Potsdam with three goals and an assist in her debut.
  • Hillicke finished with two goals and two assists in her first game with the program.
  • LaDue had two goals and an assist to go with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.
  • Pierce and Hewitt each added two goals. Pierce also had five draw controls.
  • Marks contributed a goal and an assist.
  • Freshman goalie Kimora Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made 12 saves for her first collegiate win.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night when they head to Utica for a 6:30 p.m. battle with SUNY Poly.
