Ashley Thayer's no-hitter highlighted a two-game split Thursday for the SUNY Potsdam softball team at the rain-delayed Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Thayer, a Winthrop, N.Y., native, walked three and struck out nine in seven innings of work in the Bears' 4-0 victory over Regis (Mass.), which began in the morning and concluded late in the afternoon after a lengthy halt in play due to rain. Thayer's effort is believed to be the first no-hitter in program history. She also finished 2-for-4 with a run scored at the plate and is now 3-0 for the season with just one earned run allowed. Potsdam (5-3 overall) was later defeated 7-0 against Olivet (Mich.). Junior
Brittany Pawlowski (West Seneca, N.Y.) helped the offense against Regis (0-7) with a two-run homer.
Against Olivet (9-1), senior
Susan Garrett (Queens Village, N.Y.) paced the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while junior
Heidi Grebinger (Bellmore, N.Y.) added a double. Pawlowski took the loss on the mound, striking out five in 5 2/3 innings before being replaced by junior
Katie Nawrot (Buffalo, N.Y.), who finished the game.
The Bears wrap up their spring break trip Friday with games against Ohio Wesleyan (9 a.m.) and WPI (1 p.m.) in Ft. Myers.
