Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The SUNY Potsdam softball team closed play at the Gene Cusic Classic with a pair of five-inning setbacks Friday, falling 12-1 against Ohio Wesleyan before suffering a 12-2 defeat at the hands of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Bears (5-5 overall) wrapped up their season-opening spring break trip at .500, and won't play again until April 1, when they host Plattsburgh.

Against Ohio Wesleyan (6-1), Potsdam mustered just four hits as the Battling Bishops blew the game open with a six-run fourth inning. The Bears responded with a tally in the bottom half of the frame, but were unable to further narrow their double-digit deficit.

Senior Dana Vollmuth (Great River, N.Y.), juniors Brittany Pawlowski (West Seneca, N.Y.) and Heidi Grebinger (Bellmore, N.Y.), and sophomore Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y.) posted one hit apiece for Potsdam. Junior Katie Nawrot (Buffalo, N.Y.) worked the first three innings on the mound, taking the loss.

One day after tossing what is believed to be the first no-hitter in program history in a 4-0 win over Regis, freshman pitcher Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) started against WPI (6-4) and took her first loss of the season. Thayer pitched 4 2/3 innings and struck out seven.

After Potsdam cut its deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the third thanks to run-scoring hits from Grebinger and sophomore Amanda Perry (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), the Engineers retook control, taking advantage of two errors early in the frame to put up eight runs.

Johnson and senior Jessica Brower (Staten Island, N.Y.) each scored a run for the Bears.
