Box Score 2 POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team was swept in a doubleheader Friday, falling 7-2 and 8-5 in consecutive games against Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference action at Maxcy Hall softball field.
In Game 2, the Bears (7-15 overall, 0-8 SUNYAC) took an early 3-0 lead thanks to run-scoring hits by seniors
Dana Vollmuth (Great River, N.Y.) and
Jessica Brower (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the first inning.
However, the Bengals (6-12, 4-2) would strike in the top of the fourth, scoring seven runs by taking advantage of three hits and several Potsdam miscues, including one error, a passed ball and four wild pitches.
Potsdam responded with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Buffalo State was able to hang on as the Bears left 11 runners on base, including five in the fifth and sixth frames combined.
Seven Potsdam players finished with at least one hit in the game, including sophomore
Amanda Perry (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), who was 2-for-4. Freshman pitcher
Ashley Thayer (4-5) took the loss, striking out five but walking six over the first four innings. Junior
Katie Nawrot (Buffalo, N.Y.) tossed three strong innings in relief.
In the first game, the Bears were shut out through five innings before striking in the bottom of the sixth on run-scoring hits by Perry and junior
Heidi Grebinger (Bellmore, N.Y.). Perry, who finished 3-for-3, scored on Grebinger's triple to deep right field.
Thayer and sophomore
Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y.) posted one hit apiece for Potsdam, which didn't commit an error but left seven on base.
The Bengals tallied in three of the first four innings against starting pitcher
Brittany Pawlowski (West Seneca, N.Y.), who dropped to 3-7 after pitching 5 2/3 innings.
Potsdam resumes conference play tomorrow at home against Fredonia. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m.
