Potsdam softball drops two at Geneseo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The SUNY Potsdam softball team was on the short end of one big inning in each of two games Friday, falling in a pair of contests against Geneseo in a State University of New York Athletic Conference doubleheader at Geneseo, N.Y.

The Bears (9-18 overall, 0-11 SUNYAC) lost a tightly-contested first game 9-6 before suffering a 5-0 defeat in Game 2.

In the opener, Potsdam led 5-2 through four and a half innings before the Blue Knights (13-13, 4-6) rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. In the big inning, Geneseo took advantage of four walks and crossed home plate three times before an out was recorded.

The Bears narrowed the deficit to two runs in the top of the sixth after a sacrifice fly by sophomore Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y.). After the Blue Knights responded with an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning, Potsdam brought the tying run to the plate with one out but was unable to do any damage.

Junior Heidi Grebiner (Bellmore, N.Y.) paced the offense with two hits, a run scored and two runs batted in. Junior Brittany Pawlowski (West Seneca, N.Y.) added two hits and two runs scored.

Pawlowski started on the mound and pitched four innings, dropping to 4-8 with the loss. Junior Katie Nawrot (Buffalo, N.Y.) tossed the final two frames in relief.

The Bears were unable to get the offense going in Game 2, mustering just four hits while committing a season-high seven errors, including four in a disastrous fifth inning, when Geneseo scored all five of its runs.

Freshman pitcher Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) went the distance and took a hard-luck loss as none of the five runs she allowed were earned. Thayer (5-6) scattered six hits and struck out six in the effort.

Sophomore Amanda Perry (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) led Potsdam with two hits, while Johnson and Pawlowski were the only other Bears to post hits.

The Bears continue conference action tomorrow at Brockport. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. in Brockport, N.Y.
