Softball downed in conference play

Box Score The SUNY Potsdam softball team was unable to string hits together Wednesday, suffering an 8-1 defeat against Fredonia in a State University of New York Athletic Conference game at Cortland, N.Y.

The contest was originally suspended after 1 1/2 innings on April 16 at Potsdam due to rain.

The Bears (9-21 overall, 0-14 SUNYAC) played evenly with the Blue Devils over the first six innings, closing within two runs after freshman Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) knocked in freshman Megan Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y.) with a single in the bottom of the fifth.

Fredonia (24-6, 12-4) took control of the game in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on five hits.

Thayer (5-8) took the loss on the mound, surrendering seven hits and seven walks with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Junior Katie Nawrot (Buffalo, N.Y.) retired the only hitter she faced.

Senior Dana Vollmuth (Great River, N.Y.) finished 3-for-3 to lead the Potsdam offense. Thayer posted two hits, while sophomore Jenn Jones (Watertown, N.Y.) recorded a hit in her only at-bat.

The Bears continue conference play this Friday at home against Oswego. The twin bill is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
