Potsdam avenges first-game loss with dramatic Game 2 win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team played almost flawlessly in the field, but came away with just one victory against Oswego in a State University of New York Athletic Conference doubleheader at Maxcy Hall's softball field.

The Bears (10-22 overall, 1-15 SUNYAC) won the second game in dramatic fashion by a 5-1 score after dropping the opener 6-2.

The Bears took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a single off the top of the left field fence by senior Dana Vollmuth (Great River, N.Y.), who was held up by the runner in front, who was tagging up on the play. One batter later, sophomore Amanda Perry (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) cleared the fence in left with her conference-leading eighth home run of the season, giving Potsdam a commanding 5-1 advantage.

Potsdam recorded all five of its hits in the sixth after Oswego (7-25, 2-14) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top half of the frame. The contest had been a pitcher's duel through five innings.

“We did some good things that inning,” Potsdam coach Shannon Dillabough said. “We had a slap bunt and a stolen base and then another bunt. Dana just missed a home run, then Amanda got a 3-1 pitch and did what she's supposed to do with it.”

Junior pitcher Brittany Pawlowski (West Seneca, N.Y.) retired the Lakers in the seventh for a complete-game triumph, her fifth win of the season. Pawlowski struck out seven and scattered five hits, walking her first batter of the game in the seventh.

“I can't say enough about the great job Brittany did on the mound,” Dillabough said. “Our girls worked hard to get a conference win, and they deserved it. Now we'll go after Cortland tomorrow.”

In the first game, Potsdam brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to push more than one run across in the frame.

Freshman pitcher Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) surrendered four runs in the first three innings, but settled down to keep the Bears in the game. Thayer (5-9) pitched all seven innings, striking out nine in the process. She was out-dueled by her sister, Sarah Thayer (3-8), who overcame six walks and allowed just two earned runs in a complete-game victory on the mound for Oswego.

Thayer led Potsdam offensively with two hits, including a first-inning triple, and two runs batted in. Senior Susie Garrett (Queens Village, N.Y.) reached base twice, while three others posted one hit. The Bears left seven on base, compared to four for the Lakers.

Potsdam closes out its regular season tomorrow at home against Cortland. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. Garrett, Vollmuth, and fellow seniors Allison Breivogel (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Jessica Brower (Staten Island, N.Y.) will be honored prior to the start of the games.
