Softball splits doubleheader against local rival

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team saw mixed results Thursday, splitting a pair of games against North Country rival SUNY Canton in a non-conference doubleheader at Maxcy Hall's softball field.

After a convincing 4-1 victory in the first game, the Bears (7-9 overall) suffered an 8-0 defeat in Game 2, which was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

In Game 1, the Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth to hang on. Junior pitcher Brittany Pawlowski (West Seneca, N.Y.) scattered six hits over seven innings to pick up her third win of the season, leaving two runners stranded in the top of the seventh as the Roos (6-12) threatened to get back in the game.

Senior Ally Breivogel (Bellmore, N.Y.) paced the Potsdam offense, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Freshman Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) totaled two hits, while Pawlowski knocked in two runs with a double to left center in the fourth.

In the nightcap, Potsdam mustered only two hits as Canton scored in four of its five innings at the plate. Thayer, who entered the game with a 2.24 earned run average, dropped to 4-3 on the mound after allowing six runs in four innings while striking out four.

Seniors Jessica Brower (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Dana Vollmuth (East Islip, N.Y.) tallied the lone hits for the Bears.

The Bears return to State University of New York Athletic Conference play tomorrow at Oneonta. First pitch in the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Oneonta, N.Y.
