Box Score 2 The SUNY Potsdam softball team rallied in its final at-bat twice in two games Saturday, but came away with a pair of losses against New Paltz in a State university of New York Athletic Conference doubleheader at New Paltz, N.Y.
The Bears (7-13 overall, 0-6 SUNYAC) rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh in the first game, but fell short by a 5-3 margin. Potsdam also plated three runs in the seventh inning and brought the tying run to the plate in Game 2, but was defeated 13-10.
Despite outhitting the Hawks (11-9, 3-3) 16-13 in the second game, the Bears committed four errors and allowed eight runs in the first two innings. Potsdam also struggled to find timely hits, leaving 10 on base, including at least one runner in each inning.
Seniors
Dana Vollmuth (East Islip, N.Y.) and
Allison Breivogel (Bellmore, N.Y.), and freshman
Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) combined for 10 of Potsdam's 16 hits. Vollmuth finished 4-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Breivogel totaled three hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Thayer was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while sophomore
Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y.) added a team-high three RBIs.
Junior pitcher
Brittany Pawlowski (West Seneca, N.Y.) started the game and took the loss, her sixth of the season. Sophomore
Katie Nawrot (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior
Meaghan Patterson (Malone, N.Y.) combined to pitch five innings in relief.
In Game 1, the Bears fell behind 5-0 before mounting a near-comeback in the seventh. Potsdam scored three times before leaving the tying run on first base to end the contest.
Breivogel and sophomore Jenn Jones (Watertown, N.Y.) were each 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the offense. Thayer started on the mound, striking out five in 5 2/3 innings of work. Nawrot recorded an out against the only batter she faced.
Potsdam returns to non-conference play this Wednesday at home against SUNYIT. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Maxcy Hall softball field.
