Pawlowski shines in Bears opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
QUEENSBURY, N.Y.- Senior pitcher Brittany Pawlowski was dominant on Opening Day for the 2012 SUNY Potsdam Softball team. The Bears (2-0) torched Lyndon St. in the first game and used a four-run sixth inning to cap a come from behind win in the second contest.

Pawlowski two-hit the Hornets and also excelled with the bat, going 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

The performance left Head Coach Shannon Dillabough impressed.

“Brittany had great velocity and movement today,” said Dillabough. “She attacked the hitter and didn't fall behind in many counts. It was a terrific performance.”

Thayer had three hits, including a double, and scored a run while freshman outfielders Carissa Cornwell and Megan Jubert each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the second game, the Bears trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before rallying for three runs.

“We never panicked and had a nice rally,” said Dillabough. “We were aggressive on the bases and did a lot of good things but still have things we need to improve upon.”

Pawlowski had three hits and was retired only once in the two games. Thayer got the win and went seven innings without an earned run while striking out 12 batters. She also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored on offense to key the victory.

The Bears are now off until they head to Ft. Myers, Fla. for the Gene Cusic Classic. They open play on Mar. 11 against MCLA at 1 p.m. and then face Saint Mary's College at 3 p.m.
