FT. MYERS, FLA.- Sophomore Ashley Thayer threw the second no-hitter of her career in a dramatic 2-0 victory against Mount St. Mary's. The game went into extra innings, forcing Thayer to go eight frames without allowing a hit before the Bears (4-2) could plate two runs in the top of the eighth.

To say the game was a pitcher's duel may be an understatement.  Sophomore Amanda Baresse matched zero-for-zero with Thayer through the first seven innings. The Bears did have a couple of opportunities to get to Baresse including the top of the first. Three of the first four batters in the lineup reached base via a single, loading the bases with only one out. Baresse got out of the jam by getting junior Jenny Jones to hit one back to the mound where she wisely took the force out at home. Molly McCuin was up next but went down swinging to end the threat. In the fourth inning, freshman Megan Jubert was on third base with two outs but fellow freshman Sami Brown grounded out to second stranding the runner. The Knights (0-2) were never able to mount a rally as Thayer allowed only three base runners the entire evening and never allowed a runner to get past second base. She struck out six batters and pounded the strike zone, throwing 76 of 113 pitches for strikes. Potsdam was finally able to break through in the eighth inning thanks to RBI's from Jones and a run scoring double off the bat of freshman outfielder Carissa Cornwell. Thayer marched back to the mound to finish what she had started. She walked the leadoff hitter but then settled down to retire the next three batters in order. The feat comes almost exactly a year after her first no-hitter which she accomplished on Mar. 10, 2011. Thayer defeated Regis College 4-0 and struck out nine batters in a game that was also played in Ft. Myers.   

Earlier in the afternoon, the Bears fell to Wisconsin Lutheran (1-0) 9-4. Jones drove in two runs and senior pitcher Brittany Pawlowski went 2-for-2 at the plate and pitched four innings while giving up three earned runs. Sophomore Megan Johnson took the loss, giving up four unearned runs in 2.1 innings. The Warriors were led by four RBI's from catcher Emily Sievert as Kendra Thomas improved to 1-0 on the season and allowed three earned runs while striking out eight batters as she went the distance.

The Bears return to action this afternoon for a doubleheader against Richard Stockton at 1 p.m. and New Jersey City at 3 p.m.
