WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.—St. Lawrence University (1-1) overpowered the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-2) 20-9 in the consolation game of the Spring Fling Tournament on Thursday morning. Bears senior captain
Carly Richards scored five times to reach the 200 point plateau for her career (141-63-204) and become Potsdam's all-time goals leader. Carly VanTassel scored twice and recorded four assists to lead the Saints.
St. Lawrence's Brigid Murphy opened the scoring 56 seconds into the first half, igniting a 6-1 Saint run to start the contest. Richards scored her first on a free position at 23:55 to get Potsdam within 2-1, but the marker only briefly stalled St. Lawrence's offense. Senior attack
Maribeth Simmons made it a 6-2 contest at 9:33 with an assist from freshman midfielder
Emily Petit. The Saints responded with five of the final six goals of the half. Richards converted on another free position opportunity with 1:20 on the clock, but the Bears trailed 11-3 at the break.
Freshman midfielder
Margaret Wall got Potsdam moving in the right direction with a goal 1:01 into the final period. After another St. Lawrence tally, Simmons buried her second of the game with 24:08 on the clock. Again the Saints answered with one of their own before Potsdam started a 3-0 run. Richards netted the first two and senior captain
Whitney Boshart scored the third at 14:07 to get the Bears to within 13-8. However, St. Lawrence delivered the knockout punch with a 7-0 run over the next nine minutes. Richards closed the scoring with just six seconds left.
In goal, senior captain
Kaci Milligan made 10 saves for Potsdam. Paige Powell made five saves in the first 30 minutes to earn the victory for the Saints. Addie Cunningham made four saves in the second half for the victors.
St. Lawrence outshot the Bears 39-24 and each team picked up 13 ground balls.
Simmons' two goals give her 85 career points (64g-21a) and move her within two points of Jill Paterson '01 for seventh place on the Bears' all-time scoring list.
“It was a well-played game, but St. Lawrence capitalized every one of our mistakes and we couldn't recover,” said Potsdam Head Coach
Lauren Bruce. “We were better in the second half and
Margaret Wall,
Emily Petit and
Erika Olsowske had good defensive efforts for us. We learned a lot about our strengths and weaknesses in Florida. We know what we have to improve before conference play.”
The Bears are off for 10 days before they head to Troy to take on Rensselaer on March 24, at 3 p.m.
