Bears sink Maritime, 18-7

TROY, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-1) used a big second half to pull away from Maritime College, 18-7, in a game played at RPI on Saturday afternoon. Senior attackman Pete Pike led the Bears with three goals and two assists, while junior attackman Kyle Nicholas (1g, 3a) and sophomore midfielder Jared Flath (2g, 2a) contributed four points each.

The Privateers got off to a quick start and led 2-0 three minutes into the contest. Senior midfielder Steve Tupper got Potsdam on the board at 9:05 of the first quarter and Pike evened the score four minutes later. Maritime grabbed their final lead of the contest with 2:57 left in the opening 15 minutes. Tupper tied the game with 58 seconds on the clock and sophomore midfielder Matt Donovan gave the Bears their first lead 15 seconds later.

The Privateers pulled even with Potsdam one final time at 9:35 of the second quarter, but Potsdam closed the half on a 4-1 run. The Bears got goals from Flath, junior midfielder Pat Morrill, sophomore midfielder Rob Kunz and junior midfielder Mike Faltisco during the stretch and led 8-5 at the break.

Potsdam opened the second half with two goals from Pike and senior captain Ryan Paparella and the Bears extended their lead to 12-6 after 45 minutes. After the teams traded the first two goals of the final quarter, the Bears closed the game with a 5-0 run. Potsdam got the first goals of the season from sophomore defenseman Jeff Love and senior attackman Chris Mazzeo and freshman attackman Zack Basso notched the first goal of his career.

In goal, senior Mike Quinlan stopped seven shots in the first 51:29 and junior Stefan Sloma stopped both shots he faced in the final 8:31. Privateer goalie Zack Barbuto allowed 15 goals in 54:15 and made 15 saves. Tyler Donovan allowed three goals in the final 5:45.

Potsdam outshot Maritime 44-24 and picked up 47 ground balls to the Privateers 34. John Driscoll led Maritime with a goal and two assists.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, March 27, when they host St. Lawrence at 4 p.m.
