Bears fall to Saints in home opener, 14-8

POTSDAM, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (3-2) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-4) 14-8 to spoil the Bears' home opener in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. Three Saints scored three goals and junior captain Whitney Boshart matched them to lead Potsdam.

Junior attack Brigid Hurley put the Saints up 1-0 nothing nearly four minutes into the contest, but Bears junior attack Denise Johns evened the score 10 seconds later. St. Lawrence got the next two goals from freshman midfielder Soeurette Morley and sophomore attack Carly Van Tassel at 17:30 and 15:03. Potsdam answered with two of the next three from senior attack Maribeth Simmons and Boshart to close to within 4-3 with 1:43 left in the half. However the Saints got two more from Morley and Hurley in the final 1:15 and led 6-3 at the break.

Bears freshman midfielder Margaret Wall and Boshart sandwiched two goals around one from Saints junior midfielder Hanne Bailey to make it a 7-5 St. Lawrence advantage. The Saints reeled off the next four in a row to open up an 11-5 lead and take control of the contest. Potsdam matched St. Lawrence goal-for-goal the rest of the game, but couldn't pick up ground. Boshart, freshman midfielder Emily Petit and Wall scored the final three for the Bears, but Potsdam fell short by a 14-8 count.

Saints senior goalie Paige Powell finished with five saves to earn the victory, while Potsdam senior captain Kaci Milligan stopped 14 shots.

Hurley, senior attack Alanna Piroli, and Bailey each scored three times for the Saints. Morley and freshman midfielder Mackenzie Collins scored twice and Van Tassel contributed a goal and two assists.

Simmons and Johns each recorded a goal and an assist for the Bears.

St. Lawrence outshot the Bears 37-20, but Potsdam edged the Saints in ground balls 15-13.

Potsdam is back in action on Saturday, March 31, as the Bears travel to Brockport for their SUNYAC opener at 1 p.m.
