Bears drop home opener to St. Lawrence

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam softball team (8-10) was swept in their home opener against rival St. Lawrence. The Saints took the first game 5-1 and the second by a score of 9-4.

The Saints (13-3) used a three-run second inning to seize control of game one of the doubleheader. Lauren Weisbarth  drove in two runs with a double to left center and St. Lawrence would tack on another run courtesy of a double steal. In the top of the sixth inning, the Saints added two more insurance runs which would be plenty of run support for Elizabeth McGinley.  She held the Bears hitless until the sixth inning when freshman Sami Brown laced a run scoring double to left field. McGinley would give up two more hits the rest of the way and struck out six batters in the contest. Sophomore Ashley Thayer took the loss on the mound, giving up five earned runs and nine hits in seven innings.

The teams both rallied in their first at bat of the second game. St. Lawrence put a three-spot on the board in the top half of the inning but the Bears would be quick to respond. Brown led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Heather Johnson. The next two Potsdam betters reached on walks to load the bases and Thayer smacked a double to center field to cut the lead to 3-2. The Saints would break the game open with a five run fifth-inning as they pounded out seven hits in the frame. Brown, who went 3-for-4 for the game, would knock two runs in with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bears could pull no closer. Thayer finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs but took the loss after allowing three runs in four innings.

Potsdam returns to action on Friday afternoon as they continue their 14-game home stand against SUNY New Paltz. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Maxcy Hall.
