Bears reach record in sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANTON, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam softball team (13-23) set a record for most wins in a season as they completed a sweep of SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears' pitchers held their opponents to only seven combined hits in the two games and took the games by scores of 7-1 and 9-1 to become the first Potsdam team to win 13 games in a season.

In the first game of the doubleheader, senior Brittany Pawlowski pitched the final game of her Potsdam career and made it a memorable one. She threw a complete game and allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out nine Kangaroos. Canton's lone run came with one out in the seventh inning on a wild pitch. The Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI ground out by sophomore Ashley Thayer. Potsdam would add three runs on three hits in the third and scored two more runs in the fifth and one in the seventh. For the game, senior Katie Nawrot went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and freshman Sami Brown went 2-for-4 and stole a base.

In the nightcap, Nawrot, also pitching in her final game, ended her career on a high note. She threw a complete game three-hitter and struck out seven batters. Potsdam wasted little time jumping on Canton's starter and put up four runs in the first and the seniors again were right in the middle of the rally. Pawlowski had an RBI single and came around to score on a wild pitch before Nawrot connected on her team-high fourth home run of the season. The Bears would get RBIs from Megan Johnson and Sarah Hraniotis and took advantage of two Canton errors to put nine runs on the board.

Adding to the record books was the performance of Brown. Her two stolen bases gave her 19 for the season, which are the most in Potsdam history and her .426 batting average is also tops in Bears history. Her average is good for second in the conference among players with at least 50 at bats and she also finishes the season second in stolen bases.

Pawlowski concludes her career with 20 career wins and set a personal best with a 3.38 ERA in 56 innings this season. Junior Jenny Jones ends the year as the RBI leader with 19 and Thayer led the staff with seven wins.
